Announcement of Appointment of Michael Crosby as CFMEU Administrator

Today Michael Crosby AM was appointed as Administrator of the CFMEU, replacing Mark Irving who stepped down after delivering a landmark first phase of administration.

Since his appointment in August 2024, Mark Irving has driven the restructure of, and laid the groundwork for, the union’s future. He courageously delivered on the necessary and challenging first steps to clean up the union.

“Mr Irving’s tireless leadership of the CFMEU through the most challenging period in the union’s recent history has positioned the Union to enter a new and important phase,” Mr Crosby said.

“The new phase of the Administration requires us to embed the achievements to date and begin a different phase of reform. New personnel are now moving into place to implement the systems and processes required to ensure the union can operate lawfully, ethically, and eventually democratically. This implementation stage requires a different set of skills within the Administration and within the Union.”

As Administrator, Michael Crosby will remain committed to driving change and restoring and repairing the CFMEU so that it can be a strong and independent union that delivers for its members while acting legally and with integrity.

“The Union is changing its personnel. It is changing its culture. It is working to regain its position in civil society. It is changing how it engages with employers, employer groups, regulators, governments, other unions and other industry partners. I look forward to continuing Mark’s hard work and delivering the necessary and vital change that is required to return the CFMEU to the strong and principled union it once was,” Mr Crosby said.

While Mr Irving has stepped back as Administrator, he will continue to support the Administration as Senior Counsel.
