Today I was appointed as Administrator of the CFMEU by the General Manager of the Fair Work Commission, to replace Mark Irving.
I am particularly looking forward to working with you to return the union to the control of members at the earliest possible date. While there is much to do, there is also so much for us to be proud about.
While too many of the former leaders misled and betrayed the members, that does not diminish this union’s proud history.
As Administrator, Mark has worked tirelessly over the past two years to do the necessary and hard work to ensure the Union demonstrates a zero tolerance for corruption, fraud, illegal and unethical behaviour. And while much has been done, the job of Administration is not complete.
We are now in a new phase, which is about restoring and repairing the union, so it operates ethically and effectively for the long term. Members deserve a union that fights to defend their interests and is responsive to their needs; that is well structured and has systems and processes to ensure accountability; that is respected by other unions and industry. And importantly, that it is fit to be returned to you, restored and democratic.
My determination for reform is only matched by my commitment to you, the membership of the CFMEU.
I look forward to working with you so that we can open a new and proud chapter in the union’s history.
Michael Crosby
